While you don’t have to be afraid of all germs, good hygiene is the best way to protect your family against the ones that can cause illness. Here are simple ways to fight infectious disease-causing germs, even when you’re on the go.

Carry disposable tissues and disinfectant wipes.

Disposable tissues provide great protection against coughing and sneezing. Simply cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue to capture the germs; then, toss the tissue into the trash. Disinfectant wipes are great for cleaning surfaces you come into contact with every day.

Be kind to your purse.

Purses can pick up lots of germs simply from daily use, as well as the items that are placed in them. When you set down your purse, look for benches or other devices that might be cleaned regularly instead of setting your purse on the floor. And always try to hang your purse from a hook when using public restrooms.

Clean your mobile phone.

A study found that your mobile phone could be 18 times dirtier than a toilet handle.1 To help keep it clean, use a damp cloth or disposable wipe designed for cleaning electronic screens. In addition, about once a month, use a cotton swab to reach dirt that gets stuck in between buttons or other nooks.

Wipe down shopping cart handles

Germs on public shopping carts can be transferred from hands or food—or, in some instances, children who sit in the larger front seats. A quick clean with a disinfectant wipe at the beginning of your visit can effectively limit exposure to infectious disease-causing germs.

Keep your hands clean.

The number-one tip for protecting yourself against disease-causing germs is having a proper hand-washing technique. It’s quick. It’s effective. And once you get in the habit of regularly washing your hands, you’ll be doing your part to help limit the spread of infectious disease-causing germs.
